Unit 3: Want / like / Dislike
Part 1:
To feel like ( smt / doing smt) : to want something because of the way you are feeling at that time.
Eg: What do you feel like doing tonight?
I don’t feel like going out
I feel like a drink
2. to fancy ( smt / doing smt): to feel like
Eg: I fancy going to a night club.
I don’t fancy seeing that film.
Do you fancy a cup of tea?
to be in the mood ( for smt / for doing smt / to do smt): to feel like something/ have the right feeling for something.
Eg: “Do you feel like going to see that film?”- “No, I’m not in the mood.”
Let’s sit down. I’m not in the mood to dance anymore.
I could do with ( smt): I would like very much, I need
Eg: I could do with smt to eat- I haven’t eaten all day.
to be dying ( for smt / to do smt): to want something very much.
Eg : I’m dying for a drink, I’m terribly thirsty.
to be desperate ( for smt / to do smt): to want or need smt very much.
Eg : I was desperate to go to bed because I was so tired. He’s desperate for a job.
Part 2:
to be fond of ( smt / doing smt): to like
Eg : She’s fond of giving orders.
I’m not fond of chocolate.
b.( smb / smt) : to love in a gentle or sentimental way.
Eg: Although I don’t love him, I am very fond of him.
to be keen ( on smt / on doing smt) : to like very much, to be interested in smt.
Eg: I’m keen on this kind of work.
b. ( to do smt): want to do smt very much
Eg: I wasn’t keen to come at fisrt; but now I’m glad I did.
My father’s keen for me to become a doctor.
to be crazy about ( smb / smt): to like very much.
Eg: He’s crazy about opera and listens to it all the time.
to admire ( smb / smt for smt)
Eg : I admire her for not giving up.
admiration ( for smb / smt) : the feeling of admiring
Eg: I’ve got nothing but admiration for him.
to have high opinion of ( smb / smt): to think that smb / smt has excellent qualities; to admire
Eg: Her teacher had a high opinion of her work.
to think highly of ( smb / smt):
Eg: her boss thinks highly of her because she’s very good at her job.
to think a lot of ( smb / smt)
to rave ( about smt) : to speak enthusiastically about smt
Eg: They raved about the place that they went to on holiday.
to be full of praise ( for smb / smt)
Eg: he was full of praise for your work, in fact he said it was the best thing he’d ever seen.
To respect ( smb / smt) :
Eg: I don’t like him much but I respect him because he’s good at his job.
respect ( for smb / smt): the belief that someone is important and should be respected
Eg: I listen to what my parents tell me because I have a great deal of respect for them.
to look up to smb: to respect
Eg: he looks up to his older brother.
affection ( for smb) : the feeling of being fond of someone.
Eg: She has a lot of affection for her old school friends.
taste ( in smt) : choice or preference in the things that you like.
Eg: He’s got very good taste in clothes.
She’s got terrible taste in men.
to approve ( of smt / of doing smt) : to think that something is morally right or acceptable.
Eg : Surely you don’t approve of such terrible behaviour.
approval: the feeling or statement of approving
Eg: you don’t need my approval to do anything.
to take to ( smb / smt): to like immediately and instinctively.
Part 3:
to detest ( smb / smt / doing smt) : to dislike very much
Eg: I detest having to do the washing –up.
to loathe ( smb / smt / doing smt ): to detest
Eg: I load the people like that
I load driving on motorways.
3. to despise ( smb): to detest someone because you think they have no good qualities.
Eg: I despire him and I hope I never see him again.
to have a low opinion of smb / smt: to dislike and disapprove of
Eg: I have low opinion of him because I don’t think he’s honest.
